Arthur J. Howard, Jr., 96, of Delhi, passed away on Wednesday morning, November 27, 2024 at O’Connor Hospital in Delhi.
Born on September 27, 1928 in Delhi, Arthur was the son of the late Arthur and Grace (Gage) Howard.
He married Jane (Barnhart) Howard on August 21, 1949 in Bovina Center a union that lasted 74 years until her passing on September 30, 2023.
Mr. Howard proudly served in the US Army from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1956.
Art was employed several places over the years, he worked the family dairy farm, the former Delhi Farm Equipment, drove truck for Sid Lynn, drove school bus and worked as a mechanic for Delaware Academy, served as the Town of Delhi Highway Superintendent for over a decade, and worked for the remainder of his career as maintenance director at 4-H Camp Shankitunk, until 2018 when an injury forced his retirement at 90 years of age.
He enjoyed spending time with his wife Jane, often dancing, camping or traveling. Art also enjoyed bowling and being outdoors hunting.
Besides his parents and wife, Art was predeceased by his sisters: Marion McDonald and Marge Miller.
He is survived by four children: Robert Howard of Delhi, Mark (Lu-Ann Powell) Howard of Delhi, Tom (Alysia) Howard of Oneonta and Patty Perkins of North Carolina; six grandchildren: Chris (Jess), Ken (Shannon), Kristen, Emily, Rachael (Gabe) and Ryan; eleven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law: Edith Platt of Red Hook; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life and burial of Arthur and Jane will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi, followed by a reception from noon to 3PM at the Delhi American Legion, Page Ave., Delhi.
In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Art can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Delhi or to 4-H Camp Shankitunk.
The Howard family would like to thank the nurses and aides that helped with Art’s care during the last several months.
