Charlotte Bishop Hill

Charlotte B Hill of Delhi, NY, passed away at her family home August 1st, 2026 at 76.

Born to Robert L. and Lucille S. Bishop of DeLancey, she attended Delaware Academy, making lifelong friends amongst her classmates.

Charlotte went on the study sociology, earning a Bachelors from Drew University, then continued to earn a Masters in Library Sciences from Syracuse University, where she met her beloved husband Charles. Marrying in May of 1974, they honeymooned in Bermuda, a trip they revisited to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Upon returning they made their first home in Connecticut, where Charlotte began her career at the West Hartford Public Library while Charles attended Law School. Famously, as Charlotte came to tell him their first daughter Pamela was coming, he gave her his wristwatch, said tell me when they’re five minutes apart and went back to studying for his final exams.

They returned to her home in the Catskills just after the birth of their daughter Suzanne, a move friends joked as their extended vacation in the mountains. Charlotte became a school librarian, then moved from teaching to work with her family as archivist of the O’Connor Foundation, a position she held until retirement.

Deeply dedicated to her community, Charlotte touched many lives, serving on the Boards of Directors of the O’Connor Foundation, as well as O’Connor Hospital, Hanford Mills Historical Museum, Habitat for Humanity, The Foothills Center for the Performing Arts, The Methodist Woman’s Association. She would go on to be honored as the Delaware County Professional Women's Association’s Businesswoman of the Year, and to be awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree by the State Uni of New York. An aesthete and beautiful craftswoman, she sang in the United Ministry Choir and Susquehanna Vocal Chorus and colored her life and those of family and friends through her love of quilting. Sharing this gift was to Charlotte, a joy.

She and Charles hosted numerous international students over the years, who remained close “Rotary kids,” dear to her heart to this day. As her daughters, by birth and by heart, and friends dispersed around the globe, her love of seeing vibrant places and cultures was re-enlivened, taking her on journeys to Europe, Alaska, Africa, and Asia, experiences that lit up her life and her eyes whenever she thought of listening to Balinese bell music , July snow dancing in the Alps, wandering the cobblestone streets around her semester school in France, boating the waters of the Florida Keys, and the many more sights and sounds she loved.

Charlotte’s presence will be deeply missed, remembered for her love of music, her passion for travel, her warm hugs, and Sunday afternoon telephone calls. We let go of a remarkable woman, a loving mother, a wholehearted wife, and a kind soul. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the love, joy, and kindness that were the essence of Charlotte’s being.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Charles, her daughters Pamela and Suzanne, her brother Robert (Ruthanne) Bishop, sister-in-law Senetta (Donald) Hill Koch, her five nieces, and a close-knit extended family of O’Connor, Bishops and Hills.

Services to honor Charlotte’s life will be held at the United Ministry, 1 Court Street in Delhi. Calling hours will be Friday, August 14, 2026 from 4PM until 7PM in the evening, with the funeral to follow on Saturday, August 15 at 11AM. Luncheon will be held directly after the service, followed by internment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Delhi.
