Dr. Pedro C del Rosario Jr., beloved husband, father, and family physician, of Stamford, NY, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025 at A.O Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, NY at age 92.
Known by everyone as “Dr. del”, he was born on December 27, 1932 to Pedro del Rosario Sr. and Rosario Cruz in Taytay, Rizal, Philippines. The eldest of 15 children, he received his early education in his hometown. In 1956 he graduated from the University of Santo Tomas College of Medicine; after graduating he went to the United States for his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Knoxville, TN. There he met his future wife who was a graduate student at the University of Tennessee. He also completed his three year residency in general surgery at Cumberland Hospital in Brooklyn, NY (now King’s County Hospital). Dr. del settled with his wife and first child while in private practice upon his return to the Philippines.
In 1967 he emigrated with his wife and four sons to Charleston, WV and practiced medicine at Thomas Memorial Hospital. He later moved to Prineville, WV and worked for the Wyoming County Medical Center. In 1969 the family moved to Stamford, NY to start a private practice. He was also a staff physician at Stamford Community Hospital delivering babies and making house calls. During his 35-year practice in Stamford he provided his medical services to Job Corp. in Oneonta, NY and Phoenix House in S. Kortright. He was also the Stamford Central School physician for many years as well as the town Health Officer.
A hard-working family man, he enjoyed the company of local friends while hunting in the Adirondacks and spending time at the Fran and Griff Brooks Hunting Lodge. He was an avid tennis player and occasionally played golf. He was a longtime member and past president of the Stamford Rotary Club and Delaware County Medical Society. He and his family hosted many Rotary Foreign Exchange students throughout the years. Dr. “del” always encouraged family involvement in the care of the elderly having worked at Robinson Terrace from 1989 to 2000. After retiring at the millennium, he spent the winters in San Diego as a snowbird.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years Nieva of Stamford, NY, son Nelson and Diane del Rosario of Rutland, MA, grandsons Daniel (Erica) del Rosario of Rutland, MA, great grandchildren Madeline and Samuel, Matthew (Jaclyn) del Rosario of Bolton, MA, great grandchild Charlotte. Granddaughter Dana Ann (Shaam) del Rosario of Clinton, OH. Son Paul (Rhea) grandchildren Ben and Desi of Narragansett, RI. Son Peter (Kathie) of New Paltz, NY, granddaughter Maya. Son Patrick (Katelyn) of Jefferson, NY, grandson Mike (Kellie) great granddaughter Maria and granddaughter Katie.
The Family wishes to thank and acknowledge the caregivers at Robinson Terrace and AO Fox Nursing Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association and Stamford Fire Department are welcome.
A celebration of life and visitation will be held on Friday, May 30th at MacArthur Funeral Home, 15 Buntline Drive, Stamford, NY. Calling hours will be 10 am to 12 noon followed by a religious service. Internment will follow immediately at the Stamford Cemetery.
