Elizabeth D. Elliott

Elizabeth "Betty" Day Elliott, 98, of New Kingston, passed away on Thursday morning, March 30, 2023 at the home of her daughter in Delhi, NY.

Born on February 5, 1925 in Canandaigua, NY, Betty was the oldest of six children born to Harold W. and Leona (Calman) Day.

Betty was a graduate of Cornell University where she met her husband James William (Bill) Elliott. They married on June 14, 1947 at the Canandaigua Presbyterian Church and were married for 64 years until Bill passed away in 2011.

Betty was a school teacher and also assisted her husband in the operation of their family-owned dairy farm in New Kingston, which is still operated by the family today.

She always had a large vegetable garden and preserved her bountiful harvest which she wrested from the rocky Delaware County soil. Betty loved growing flowers and exhibited both vegetables and flowers at the county fair. She enjoyed genealogy, local history and working on preserving the past of the family homestead. Betty was a devoted wife and supported her husband in his many endeavors. She especially enjoyed flying with him in his single engine plane to visit friends and relatives. She was a supportive mother and raised 6 children.

Betty was a member of the New Kingston Presbyterian Church, The Daughter’s of the American Revolution and the Delaware County Republican Committee. She was active in the Grange and was a 4H leader when her children were young.

Besides her husband and parents, Betty was predeceased by her daughter Jacquelyn Helmer in 2020.

She is survived by her children: Mary (Lowell McCormick) Elliott, Marjorie (Bill) Trelease, James (Andrea) Elliott Jr., Lynn (Karen) Elliott and Sally (Roy) Scrimshaw; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters: Jane, Ruth and Marion; brothers: Albert and Everett; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the Margaretville Presbyterian Church, 87 Orchard Street, Margaretville, NY 12455. Friends and relatives are invited to call from 1-2 PM at the church. A reception will follow the service. Burial will be at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the New Kingston Presbyterian Church, The Daughter’s of the American Revolution or Helios Care.
