Gilbert J. Hirscher, Sr.

Gilbert J. Hirscher, a.k.a. Ehrmanntraut, was born Nov. 23, 1938 in Kaiserslautern, Germany to Josef Ehrmanntraut and Maria Theresa (Schmitt) Ehrmanntraut.

In 1940, after his father Josef died, he immigrated to America with his mother, Maria at the age of 17 months old, entering through Ellis Island. Gil grew up in Philadelphia, PA, graduated from Villanova University, married Ethel C. Moore in 1960 and started a family.

In 1970, he moved the family of 5 daughters to Stamford, NY where two more children were added to the family. While in Stamford he and his wife were members of the Stamford Rescue Squad and Volunteer Fire Department. Gilbert was a member of the Stamford Rotary Club and Sacred Heart Church. Gil worked as a Certified Public Accountant at several businesses in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a Eucharistic Minister.

In 1980 Gil and Ethel moved to Danbury, CT. In 2003, his wife Ethel suffered a devastating stroke which led the move to North Carolina where two of his daughters assisted him in caring for our mother, Ethel, for almost 20 years.

Gilbert is survived by his children, Debbie Hirscher (NC), Terry Hait (NY), Sandy Hirscher (NC), Frannie Caco (CT), Lori Clarke (NC), Gilbert, Jr. (WV) and Connie (CT); 42 grand and great grandchildren; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law; nephews and sons-in-law.

A memorial funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at St. Joseph’s Church in Worcester, NY at 11 am. A reception will follow the mass in the Social Hall at the church.

Gilbert and Ethel will be laid to rest in the West Jefferson Cemetery in a private ceremony at the family’s convenience.
