James E. Churchill, Jr.

James E. Churchill, Jr. passed away on April 14, 2024, near his home in Palm City, FL.

Mr. Churchill was born in Stamford, NY, on March 9, 1939, to James Edwin Churchill and Margaret McCormick Churchill. His family roots ran deep in the town of Stamford, as both his grandfather, a former mayor of Stamford, and his father owned the former Delaware Inn, which was located on Main Street in Stamford. In the early 1940’s, Jim and his parents moved to New York City, where he spent most of his formative years. He proudly earned a bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University.

He worked at Grolier, Inc. as an executive editor. His career highlight was overseeing the publication of the yearly Encyclopedia Americana Annual. In the late 1970s, he moved with the company to Danbury, CT, where he resided in Bethel, CT until he retired in 2001. The company was purchased by Scholastic, Inc. in 2000, and he continued to do part-time freelance editing for them before fully retiring in Palm City, FL.

Though Jim never married, he cherished the time spent with his family and friends. He is survived by his sister, Mary Churchill Doran; her late husband William E. Doran, their sons William Jr., James, and Timothy; grandnieces Emily, Cathryn, and Allison; grandnephew Thomas, and many cousins. Among close friends and family, he was affectionately known as “Unc”.

Mr. Churchill enjoyed reading, exploring new places, and spending time with people he loved. He had a particular fondness for the beach and often reminisced about the many summers he spent in the Hamptons on Long Island, surrounded by dear friends. He will be remembered as a gentleman of great kindness and compassion.

Visitation will be from 12Noon until 1PM on Friday, April 19, 2024, at MacArthur Funeral Home, 15 Buntline Drive, Stamford, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:30 pm at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford, NY, followed by interment at Stamford Cemetery.
