James Govern

James V. Govern, Sr., of Stamford, NY died peacefully on February 23, 2017, with his loving daughter and son-in-law, by his side. He was born in Stamford on September 17, 1924 to Eugene and Josephine Govern. He lived in Stamford all his life. He graduated from Stamford Central School and served honorably in the United States Navy. His lifetime employment was at Catskill Craftsman which was a family owned business founded by his father Eugene Govern Sr. Jim was a member of the Stamford Fire Department for many years. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. He was also a member of the Stamford Golf Club for many years and enjoyed the annual Invitational Golf Tournament with his golf buddies Richard Reed of Hobart and Charles (Sparrow) Sitts of Stamford. He was a contributor to the creation of the Scotch Valley Ski Area. He was predeceased by his son, James Jr. and nephew, Eugene; his brothers, Thomas and Eugene and sister Margaret. Jim is survived by his daughter, Michele, son-in-law, Jason Terrence, and granddaughter, Emily Meister; his nieces, Joyce (Schuyler) Pindar , Jane Govern, Jolene (Max) Young, Kim Watson, nephew Tim Keller, and his cousin Len Govern. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 10am with the Rev. Michael Cambi, celebrant. Internment will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim's memory may be made to the Stamford Fire Department.
