John B. Herron, Sr.

John B. Herron Sr., a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and dedicated servant to his community, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026.

John is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Doris. Together, they built a life centered on family, service, and love. He was a devoted father to his three sons, John “T.J.” Herron Jr., Travis (Mialisa) Herron, and Chris (Rachele) Herron, and a proud grandfather to his granddaughters, Emma and Madeline Herron. He is also survived by his siblings, Dorothy Dunham, James Herron Jr., Mary Lou Mattice, and Patricia Judd.

John was born on October 31, 1945, to James and Dorothy Herron. Raised on the family farm in Davenport, he learned the value of hard work and dedication from an early age. It was there that his deep love for the outdoors and nature began and continued to grow throughout his life. An avid hunter, fisherman, and trapper, John spent much of his life outdoors. He worked for over 30 years with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in Stamford, where he was committed to the improvement and preservation of wildlife. He brought that same passion home, continuing to make maple syrup and spent countless hours in the woods and fields he loved.

John believed deeply in giving back and devoted many years to serving his community. He served as a volunteer firefighter, President of the town water company, and President of the local school board. In each of these roles, he shared his time, leadership, and dedication to making his community a better place for others.

He was especially proud of his military service. John served his country as a Private First Class in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. While serving, he was wounded and subsequently became disabled. His service remained an important part of his identity, and he carried great pride in having served his country.

Above all, John’s greatest pride was his family. He will be remembered for his love and devotion as a husband and father, his joy in his grandchildren, his willingness to serve others, and the lasting impact he made on his family and community.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, sacrifice, and family that will live on in all who knew and loved him.

Rest peacefully, Dad. Your service is complete, but your legacy lives on.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 4-7PM on Friday, August 21, 2026 at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 15 Buntline Drive, Stamford, NY 12167. A celebration of John’s life will be held at 11AM on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, 15673 State Highway 23, Davenport, NY 13750, followed by burial with full military honors at Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.
