John F. Olive, 93, of Delhi, passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday morning, May 21, 2025.
Born on April 6, 1932 in Oneonta, NY, John was the son of the late Donald and Ethel (Settzo) Olive.
He proudly served in the US Marine Corps from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1954.
John was married to Sylvia M. (VanBramer) Olive in December of 1954, a union that lasted nearly 65 years until her passing on July 17, 2019.
Mr. Olive taught Mathematics at Delaware Academy from 1957 until his retirement in 1994, fondly remembered by generations of Delhi students and often referred to as one of their best teachers.
John enjoyed the outdoors, often camping and kayaking. He enjoyed playing golf and cards with his friends and family. He was a college basketball fan, always cheering on University of North Carolina Tar Heels.
Besides his beloved wife Sylvia, John was predeceased by his grandson Matthew Olive, a sister Jean Kaelber, and brother Russell Olive.
John is survived by his children: Jeff (Ann) Olive of Virgina Beach, VA, Stacy (John) Paffenroth of Redlands, CA, and Scot (Sheila) Olive of Brooklyn, NY; six grandchildren: Joshua (Pam) Olive, Samantha (Bijan) Ghorashi, Chelsea (Cameron) Husted, Dylan Paffenroth, Eamon Olive and Desmond Olive; seven great-grandchildren: Jackson, Ryan, River, Leland, Cohen, Oliver and Kylie.
At John’s request private funeral services were held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Delhi, where John was entombed with Sylvia.
