Lucille “Lucy” Waid, known to most as “Nanny”, passed away at her home following a brief, yet courageous battle with cancer on Thursday September 25. 2025, surrounded by her loving family and closest friends.
Lucy was born September 5, 1953, in Oneonta, to the late Amos and Edith Bates.
She married the love of her life, Edward Waid, on May 8, 1971, in South Valley, NY. They moved to Davenport in May of 1986, where they raised their family and became pillars in the community. Lucy joined the Davenport Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary soon after they moved and continued to serve there until her illness.
Lucy held many jobs throughout her life, none of which fulfilled her heart more than her role as Nanny to her own grandchildren and her countless extended ones. Nanny loved cheering on her children and grandchildren at their concerts, dance recitals and sporting events, always with her famous bag of treats in hand. You could always count on her for a laugh and a full belly. Lucy loved traveling with her husband, but what she enjoyed most of all was camping with her camp friends.
Lucy is survived by her husband: Edward; her children: Karen (Roger) Wamsley, Robert (Nicole) Waid, Todd Waid (Sally Scofield), Jason (Sarah) Waid, and Kristin Waid (Gary Menhinick); her grandchildren: Holly Waid, Jennifer (Steven) Mickel, Kyle (Brittany) Wamsley, Tyler (Brye) Wamsley, Bailey Waid, Jackson Waid, Chelsea (Hunter) Wilms, Dylan Waid, Trevor Waid and their mother Samona Waid, Lila Waid, Cooper Waid, Noah Menhinick and Zoey Menhinick; her great grandchildren: Patrick, Karli, Thomas, Penelope, Anna and Logan. She is also survived by her family at heart: Paul and Becky Garrison, Honnah Garrison and Tanner Cole and Kandy Collins. Along with her siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, special friends and extended family.
There will be a celebration of Nanny’s beautiful life at 1PM on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at the Davenport Fire House. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Davenport Fire Department or CVCS Dollars For Scholars.
