It is with deep sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Paul J. Guntert on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY.
Born in Albany, NY on December 1, 1947, Paul was the oldest of three children blessing his parents, Karl and Elizabeth (Mathis) Guntert of East Meredith, NY.
Paul graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi in 1965. He attended Alfred Tech for one year before entering the US Army in 1967, serving in Vietnam and Germany as a Radio Specialist. After his honorable discharge in 1970, Paul enrolled and graduated from Delhi Tech (SUNY Delhi) with a degree in Architectural Technology. His career centered around employment in the architectural and engineering fields, retiring from Atlantic Testing Laboratories in 2015.
Paul learned the value of hard work and responsibility at a young age growing up on his family farm in Meridale, NY. Most knew him as a quiet soul, but amongst his close friends, he revealed his sense of adventure, curiosity and mischief. He developed a proclivity towards all things cars, especially Corvettes. Restoring them, maintaining their authenticity and driving them became his passion. He also gravitated to restoring antique bicycles and developed a knowledge for building other collections. Paul was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed the chance to share his observations and experiences. Gifted with patience and an intense ability to focus given a challenge, he always figured out how to fix things. A bit of a mechanic, an engineer, a YouTube enthusiast, Paul rarely encountered a repair situation he would not attempt and found great satisfaction in his successes. He took great pride in a well-manicured property and home, truly reflecting his love of his family’s country homestead.
Paul enjoyed people, especially his daily morning trips to McDonald’s to eat and socialize with the group of friends who all eventually became known as The Breakfast Club. He seldom missed a day to exchange humor, debate and share the latest news events.
Paul was predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Jean and Lucy.
He is survived by his Aunt Viola and several Laing and Guntert cousins, his lifelong best friend Peter Hoffmann and his wife, Colleen, his close friend and devoted companion, Peg Baldwin, and his beloved pet, Molly.
