Ruth Lyons

Ruth Lyons, lifelong Stamford-area resident, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026 at the age of 93. She was born on February 15, 1933, to Hazel Raeder Beers and Lloyd Beers in Stamford. After graduating from Oneonta State, she began her teaching career in the then-territory of Alaska, before returning to Stamford to continue her work with children. She taught first grade at Stamford Central School for 26 years until her retirement in 1988. She married Robert Lyons in 1973, and together they shared 25 wonderful years until his death in 1998. Ruth enjoyed traveling, reading, local history, and jigsaw puzzles. She was proud to have visited all 50 U.S. states in her travels with family through the years.

Ruth was an engaged citizen who served on the board at the Stamford Library for many years. She was also a devoted member of the First Presbyterian/United Methodist Church in Stamford, where she volunteered her time as an elder. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and the many lives she touched.

In addition to her husband and her parents, Ruth was predeceased by her brother Robert Beers and sister-in-law Nancy Beers.

She is survived by her brother Richard Beers; her brother Stanley Beers and his wife Ann; her sister Eleanor Seckner and her husband Gordon; her sister Elaine Faella, and her husband Felix; her stepson Robert Lyons and his wife Ellen; her stepdaughter Ann Matrone; and her step-grandchildren, Todd Wainwight, Kate DeVagno, and AJ Matrone. She was a beloved aunt to her many nieces, nephews, and their children.

Burial and a graveside service will be held at Fairlawn Cemetery in Prattsville, New York, on Saturday April 25 at 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will be held in June in Stamford.
