Stephen L. Schmitt

Stephen L. Schmitt, 63 of Harpersfield, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2022, surrounded by his family.

Steve was born on December 8, 1958, to the late Betty (Hillis) and Donald Gordon Schmitt in Stamford, NY. Steve graduated from Jefferson Central School in 1977 and then attended SUNY Cobleskill. Steve devoted 35 years to the Town of Harpersfield Highway Department. Steve is survived by the love of his life and wife of 38 years, Carol (Pindar) Schmitt, his children, Cody (Sarah) Schmitt, Stephen J. Schmitt (Sarah Rathjen), grandchildren Lillian and Owen, siblings Roxanne (Charles) Jochem, Gary (Lisa) Schmitt, Larry Schmitt, and so many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, “adopted family” and friends.

Steve didn’t need much to be happy. You could find him on a road trip with his boys, sitting by the evaporator, laughing with a beer, playing cards, driving a tractor, watching a game, or with grandchildren snuggled up on his lap around a campfire. Steve brought joy, laughter, and love to each person he knew.

The family will receive visitors to pay their respect from 3-6 pm on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 15 Buntline Drive, Stamford, NY. Friends and family are also welcome to join us in a celebration of Steve’s life, at Bud’s Place in Worcester, at 2PM on Saturday, October 1st.
