Walter Eppich, of Hamden, NY passed away on September 26, 2026 at the age of 91.
Born in Ebental, a German-speaking region of what is now Slovenia, Walter moved with his family to Graz, Austria, after World War II. In 1950 he immigrated to Ridgewood in New York City. There he met Rose Matzelle, and during his two years of Army service in Europe, the two exchanged letters every day. They married on November 29, 1958 and shared 67 years together.
A gifted soccer player and lifelong fan, Walter helped win multiple championships in New York's German American soccer league. He worked as a brewer, first at Schaefer Brewery in Brooklyn, NY and later at Stroh Brewery in Allentown, PA. In retirement, he and Rose settled full time on Basin Clove Road in Hamden, NY, where he spent every autumn deer hunting, his great passion.
